Renovation Project 

The Lincoln Clay Arts Center is restoring and adapting the historic Carnegie Library to serve a new public purpose while preserving the architechtural character and integrity of the building. The renovation of the Carnegie Library is guided by a commitment to historic preservation, accessibility, and functional reuse. The project focuses on addressing building deficiencies while maintaining the architectural features that define the library’s historic character. Following a comprehensive building assessment and environmental analysis, the structure was found to be in generally good condition, with no evidence of asbestos or lead-based paint. The assessment identified a series of targeted improvements necessary to safely reopen the building to the public and support its new use as a clay arts center.

Planned Improvements Include:

• Providing ADA-compliant access to the main upper level and upgrading the restroom facility

• Servicing and upgrading building systems, including HVAC and electrical infrastructure

• Restoring interior finishes, including flooring, lighting, walls, and ceilings, while retaining original historic fixtures where possible

• Repairing deferred exterior maintenance, including roof tiles, concrete steps, window frames, and building trim

• Installing specialized equipment to support artist studios, workshops, and exhibitions

• Enhancing exterior landscaping, lighting, and signage to improve safety and visibility

The renovation effort is being carried out in coordination with the City of Lincoln and preservation professionals to ensure that the Carnegie Library continues to serve the community while honoring its historic significance.
